By Taylor Smith

The return of Princeton Farmers’ Market on Hinds Plaza is a sure sign of spring and the promise of summer. The final April Outdoor Market will take place this Thursday, April 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Hinds Plaza adjacent to the Princeton Public Library. Beginning on Thursday, May 19, the market will re-occur every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, through the end of November.

Since its inception in 2009, the market has grown considerably. The market was started by Jack Morrison in partnership with Pam Mount, Fran McManus, Kristin Appelget, and Raoul and Carlo Momo. The original market was stationed at the old Wild Oats site and the West Coast Video building. The market has been housed at Hinds Plaza since 2010.

All of the vendors/farmers are either locally grown or sourced in New Jersey.

Patrons can visit www.princetonfarmersmarket.com each week to see what produce is in season. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, the market offers fresh meat, cheese, milk, juice, gluten-free baked goods, chocolate, nut butters, pasta, popcorn, flowers, pickles, table linens, handmade pillows, and much more.

An updated vendor list for the Summer 2016 season will be launched online shortly.

Follow Princeton Farmer’s Market on instagram for weekly shots of the outdoor market.

“I Was Very Fond of Both of Them”: Kristina Lindbergh on Her Grandparents

Lindbergh Grandaughter

By Anne Levin

During the summer of Kristina Lindbergh’s 14th year, she spent a week with her famous grandparents, Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, at their home in Switzerland. While she has pleasant recollections of the visit, the eldest of the famous couple’s grandchildren distinctly remembers being captive for at least one of her grandfather’s lectures.

“I once got trapped in front of the fire with him for one of his downfall-of-civilization speeches,” Ms. Lindbergh recalls with a chuckle. “I argued with him, but he had the facts to back him up. I think I’m not the only one in the family who got that speech.”

Stern orations aside, Ms. Lindbergh, 61, has fond memories of both her grandparents — the controversial aviator who was the first to cross the Atlantic in 1927, and his wife, who became an accomplished author. They are the subject of a talk she will give Friday at an afternoon tea being held at The Present Day Club, across Stockton Street from Morven, where the exhibit “Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh: Couple of an Age” is on view through October.

Ms. Lindbergh lives in Yorktown, New York, with her husband. The daughter of the Lindberghs’ son, Jon, she grew up with her siblings on the west coast. Her grandparents lived across the country and traveled constantly, so she didn’t see them often. “But they would visit whenever they were headed somewhere else and could stop and spend some time with us,” she said. “I was very fond of both of them.”

It makes sense that Ms. Lindbergh was closest to her grandmother, who outlived her husband by 27 years. Anne Morrow Lindbergh was also an easier person to know. “She was the most wonderful sort of comfortable person you could possibly meet,” Ms. Lindbergh said. “Incredibly humble, always wanting to help with the dishes, that sort of thing. But they both seemed very interested in all of us, and loved to know what we were doing.”

Ms. Lindbergh describes her grandfather as “extremely focused,” she said. “When I first heard about Aspberger Syndrome, I thought, hmmm … I knew someone who had that. He was always working on a book or something, and he’d go straight to the kitchen table and open up his book and start working. He wasn’t ignoring you, but that was his focus. On the other hand, he would play with us, and whirl us around. He was incredibly strong. My father was always planting trees and he would jump right in to help him, digging holes and chopping wood.”

By the time Ms. Lindbergh knew her grandfather, he was obsessed with environmental issues. “He wanted to preserve wildlife, primitive cultures, and the landscape,” she said. “I think a lot of his understanding of what was happening came from looking down on the earth from airplanes. After his Paris flight, he flew all over the U.S., so he knew what it looked like. Then, he and my grandmother made survey flights and did speed trials, so they spent a lot of time in the air and had a good look from above. As time passed, he saw that massive pieces of land were being cleared, and rivers were being fouled. He turned a kind of about-face, saying that the air technology he had been so enthusiastic about might have done more damage. He was also shocked by the ravages of war. He was one of the first witnesses to visit Europe right after World War II, and he was horrified.”

The exhibit at Morven is focused more on the Lindberghs’ relationship than his record-making flight across the Atlantic, the kidnapping of the couple’s toddler son, and the aviator’s Nazi-era controversies.

Lindbergh’s exalted hero status suffered a major blow in the early years of World War II, due to his associations with members of the Third Reich. Asked to assess the strength of the German air fleet, he made numerous trips to Berlin and began to admire certain aspects of German life. “He became an advocate for isolationism and the face of the America First Committee,” reads the program guide for the Morven exhibit. “He resigned from the Air Force, dramatically. And at an infamous rally in Des Moines in 1941, he was exposed as
an anti-semite.”

“To me, it’s inconceivable that he was anti-semitic,” said Ms. Lindbergh, who hasn’t seen the exhibit. “I don’t think he saw human beings in those kinds of terms. But he did make speeches before World War II in an effort to keep the U.S. out of it. I think clearly, in hindsight, he was wrong, but for very good reasons. His terrible error was to blame Jewish people, the British, and the Roosevelt administration for pushing the country to get into the war.”

Ms. Lindbergh has read the Des Moines speech several times, and feels it is not anti-semitic. “It was unwise to pick out the Jewish people as pro-war people, and inaccurate,” she said. “But he went on to say he didn’t blame the Jewish people for wanting the overthrow of the Nazis. Apparently FDR felt my grandfather was the biggest impediment for getting us into the war, and he intentionally launched a defamation campaign against him and said he was absolutely convinced he was a Nazi.

“It’s so interesting for me to hear that, and weigh it against the kind of things we hear today, how the public will grab onto something and vilify,” she continued. “I think maybe FDR had to do that. But the consequences for our family were considerable. To hear Scott Simon on NPR compare Donald Trump to my grandfather …. All I can say is that if my grandfather uttered an ill-considered word or phrase, I never heard it. I don’t think what he said had anything to do with his feeling for Jewish people apart for his extraordinary effort to keep us out of the war. It was out of extreme patriotism.”

It has been 13 years since the news emerged that Lindbergh had three extra-marital affairs that produced seven children, who live in Germany. This extraordinary development “still boggles my mind,” Ms. Lindbergh said. “I cannot imagine why that happened. All the
children of these other families are younger than I am. We could have used some of that attention he gave them. But who knows? Someone said maybe he wanted to experience an un-famous family life. I know that I raised two children and found that exhausting. And he had five living children in his first family, all of whom were wonderful, but it was not easy.”

Ms. Lindbergh and other family members have met their European half-siblings. “We love them,” she said. “So it’s really nice, actually. They look like us. They have similar interests. It’s sort of wild.”

Did her grandmother know? “I don’t think so,” Ms. Lindbergh said. “However, when I was working on a last book of her letters, I found a diary entry in which she had just come back from a dinner with the director of the movie The Spirit of St. Louis, and had a long conversation with the wives of several brilliant men. She said it seemed clear to her that a genius needs more than just one wife … a satellite of supportive women who can buoy him up and give him comfort when he needs it. So I thought, maybe she told him to go out and get more wives. I’m not sure we’ll ever know.”

The afternoon tea will take place at 4 p.m. at The Present Day Club, 72 Stockton Street. Tickets are $50 ($45 for Friends of Morven). Pre-register at morven.org.

Toughest Golf Holes in NJ

$

shutterstock_210799615

If Phil Mickelson’s had trouble with these holes, we can only imagine how we’d look teeing off at these challenging spots on NJ golf courses

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

Urban Agenda highlights some of the toughest spots to tee off in New Jersey.

Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, NJ

Hardest hole: 6 Center, nicknamed “Nickel & Dime”

Designed by A.W. Tillinghast in 1929, the Ridgewood Country Club’s hole number 6 on their center course is their most difficult spot to tee off. According to the Ridgewood Golf Pro, at the 6 Center, golfers aim for a very, very small green that makes for the perfect risk/reward hole. The 275-yard par-4 hole is dubbed the “Nickel & Dime” because in the 1930s players used a 5 iron and 10 iron, which is called a wedge today. In the 2014 PGA tournament in Ridgewood, Phil Mickelson couldn’t even conquer the Nickel & Dime. Twice, while at 6 Center, he hit the ball into the concession stands.

Essex County Country Club in West Orange, NJ

Hardest hole: 11

Another design by A.W. Tilinghast and Seth Raynor, the Essex County Country Club first opened in 1887. A highly rated course, one of its most infamous holes is the 215-yard par-3 hole 11. An Essex County Course Golf Pro calls the hole, “visually intimidating.” To reach the green, golfers must overcome a ravine and a series of bunkers. Although there isn’t an official name for the hole, the Golf Pro claims that everyone knows the wrath of hole number 11.

Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield Township, NJ

Hardest hole: 3 Lower

The 121-year-old golf course designed by Tilinghast deems the 503-yard par-4 hole number 3 its trickiest. Golf Pro Max says the hole is a tight tee shot with a creek running across the second fairway that prevents golfers from running up their first shot. With the PGA Tournament returning to Baltusrol this July, we’ll have to see how the pros handle this challenging hole.

Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, NJ

Hardest hole: 2, named “Middle Road”

In 1998, Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed the Hamilton Farm Golf Club along with its toughest hole: the Middle Road. The 125-yard par-5 hole is extremely elevated with lots of undulation. The main drive is up its right side and there are deep bunkers in the middle of the fairway on the second shot which makes it particularly challenging.

Rossmoor Golf Club in Monroe Township, NJ

Hardest hole: 12

Designed by Desmond Muirhead in 1966, the Rossmoor’s course contains two small lakes, and one of them splits hole number 12. This 163-yard par-3 back tee requires golfers to cross over water in order to get to its elevated green.

Yanina Fleysher’s 10 Favorite Things

Like the diamonds she uses in her timeless designs, Yanina Fleysher is equal parts elegance and strength. As the founder and owner of Yanina and Company in Cedar Grove and Basking Ridge, Fleysher is one of New Jersey’s premiere jewelers. But before her baubles attracted the likes of Caroline Manzo and Kim Kardashian, Fleysher was catering to a far more humble crowd.

After emigrating from Russia to the United States at age 12, Fleysher assisted a jeweler at a flea market in Union to help support her family. Merely 14 when she started working, Fleysher quickly revealed her intuitive understanding of people – and jewelry. At 19, she negotiated a five-year lease deal with the support of her father to occupy one of the biggest booths in a Wayne, NJ Jewelry Exchange. Despite the skepticism of the lessor, Fleysher’s booth boomed with business, foreshadowing the success of her retail jewelry store, which she opened in 1987.

emerald ringSince its debut, Yanina and Company has established itself as a leader in the industry and has twice been named the number one jeweler in the state. The family-owned business carries fine custom-made jewelry that is manufactured in house, and primarily designed by Fleysher. Yanina has distinguished herself with her ever-evolving jewelry designs that are timeless, yet fashion-forward. Her company’s remodeling and redesign offerings perhaps best exemplify their ability to fuse old and new. Thanks to a Computer Assisted Design (CAD) program, clients are able to participate in every step of the jewelry design process. This efficient technology allows individuals to see a blueprint of their jewelry before its made. Whether it’s modernizing a family heirloom or creating a custom engagement ring, Yanina’s tech-savvy team guarantees an unrivalled piece.

Characterized by her challenging journey, Fleysher has an uncanny way of connecting with her customers, whom she refers to as friends. That’s because many of them have been Yanina’s customers since her Jewelry Exchange debut.

Not only are people attracted to the jewelry store’s bold, high-quality pieces, but also their affordability. Since Yanina and Company designs and crafts their own jewelry; they can make stunning creations at any price point. In true Fleysher fashion, the respected jeweler never turns away a customer.

Her sensitivity to the needs of all people is rooted impart to the company’s family-values, or rather, family involvement. Fleysher’s brother, Alex, is Yanina and Company’s Vice-President, her son, Brenden, is the Director of Business Development, and her mother, Claudia, is the Company’s controller. To further display her deep-rooted love for her family, Yanina’s timeless jewelry collection is named after her daughter, Sydney.

Recently named one of HudsonMod’s Women to Watch 2016, Yanina Fleysher continues to be a force not only as a jewelry designer, but also as a mother, daughter, women’s rights activist, and entrepreneur. Here, Urban Agenda takes a closer look at the woman who’s making NJ sparkle brighter than ever.

My Children

Branden and Sydney are my everything. I know, every mom says that but it’s the honest truth. They are my source of happiness, ambition, and pride. Sydney is a strong, free spirited college student whose spontaneous nature and creativity never seizes to amaze me. I’m lucky enough to come to work every day with my son Branden. His innovative mind and kind soul has brought so much joy in my life and my business. I am truly blessed to call them my children.

My Grandmother, Maria

My grandmother is 94 years old and the matriarch of my close knit Russian family. Her petite stature is a disguise to her larger than life personality. Her life experiences, struggles, and memories are her greatest gifts to our family.

miami

 Miami

Every so often I need a time out. My beachfront home in Miami is my perfect getaway. The moment I arrive, a wave of serenity comes over me. I love the night life, the weather, and the relaxation.

My Spiritual Bracelet

Three years ago, I created a line of spiritual stone bracelets after an eye opening trip to Mii Amo Spa in Sedona, Arizona. I became in tune with my spiritual side and gained a wealth of knowledge about the power of certain semi precious stones. I wear mine every day.

My morning ritual

Most mornings I wake up and enjoy a cup of coffee on my balcony. There is a beautiful view of New York City and I sit in silence and gather my thoughts for the day. I treasure this time.

Daughter’s Paintings

Over the years, my daughter has gifted me with many beautiful paintings. She is an amazing artist. I love walking through my apartment and seeing her art in every room.

tomatoes

Jersey Tomatoes

I patiently wait every year for them to be in season and once they hit my local farmer’s market, I’m hooked. I can eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They are the most delicious when sliced with a little bit of salt and pepper.

LuNello in Cedar Grove

This is my favorite restaurant in New Jersey. The atmosphere, the service, and the delicious Italian food make for the perfect evening out.

Bottega Veneta Python Handbag

This handbag is a gorgeous piece of fashion and craftsmanship, but it’s the story behind it that makes it special. My family splurged many years ago and took a trip to Paris. I shopped all around the city and came across this bag and purchased it without hesitation. At that moment, I was so proud of myself and thought about how far I have come in my business and my personal life. I was once a poor girl from the Soviet Union wishing for a pair of jeans and now I created an incredible business and life for myself.   Wearing this bag always seems to remind me of my journey.

My Business

Yanina & Co. is my happy place. My business is based on making others happy by creating beautiful and meaningful jewelry. Over the years my customers have become some of my closest friends. What’s not to love about that?

Tracy K. Smith and Coco

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

Photography by Andrew Wilkinson

Princeton might be the home of the tigers, but it doesn’t seem complete without its dogs. Thanks to its dog-friendly places, the town abounds with proud owners and their furry companions. You’ll find pets and their parents sunning on the Princeton Battle
field and their more active counterparts jogging the Delaware and Raritan Canal.
Nassau Street is full of fashionable dog-owner duos shopping at Lululemon Athletica or Urban Outfitters, and the Nassau Inn lodges both human and canine out-of-towners.

Princeton’s gastronomic landscape proves equally pooch-positive. The outdoor dining areas at Witherspoon Grill and Despana welcome dogs, and Benefit Boutique, along with other retailers, offers doggie water and treats on their sidewalks. In addition,
a portion of the proceeds from the puppy ice cream sold at the bent spoon supports the American Rescue Farm of Mercer.

With so much to offer, it’s no wonder that Princetonians rarely leave home without
their dogs. To celebrate the unique connection between the dogs and owners of
Princeton, we photographed some of the town’s most devoted packs of two.

TRACY AND COCO

Owner: Tracy K. Smith, Writer and Professor of Creative Writing at Princeton University

Dog: Coco, 6 year-old female from SAVE Animal Rescue

Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever

Favorite Princeton Activity: Long walks along the paths near Lake Carnegie, and curling up on the couch.

“Coco and I bonded pretty instantly. We visited SAVE in January to donate Shaba, our older dog’s, belongings after he passed away. My husband has always been the true dog lover. I’ve just kind of gone along for the ride. But something urged me to take a look at the dogs waiting for homes, and when Coco and I met, there was this great feeling of recognition. I guess I’d call it a conversion experience. I feel as though I’ve met my ‘spirit animal.’” — Tracy K. Smith

Dog: Sasha, 9 year-old female from a shelter
in Colts Neck, NJ

Breed: Black American Cocker Spaniel

Favorite Princeton Activity: Walking
through town

“Sasha was used for breeding, but once she lived out her usefulness, she was taken to a pound in Philadelphia, rescued, and adopted by Andrew. Now, she lives out her days greeting customers at Hinkson’s The Office Store. According to Andrew, “Sasha is great with people, especially children, which works out well for me since she comes to the store with me most of the time.” – Andrew Mangone

LIZ AND BAGEL BEAR

Owner: Liz Lempert, Mayor of Princeton

Dog: Bagel Bear, 6 month-old female from Unleashed NY, a leadership and empowerment program for middle school girls centered on puppy rescue

Breed: Australian Shepherd Mix or Hound Mix

Favorite Princeton Activity: Walking along the towpath and around Mountain Lakes

“Bagel Bear’s name was a joint effort. I have two daughters—one wanted to name our puppy ‘Bagel,’ and the other wanted to name her ‘Bear.’ ‘Bagel Bear’ was the compromise. Bagel Bear gets along with everyone—little kids, other dogs, and even our mailman! She is sweet and gentle with our pet bunny, too. She is a good dog, and super enthusiastic. She sits on command, but being in a sitting position doesn’t stop her from wagging her tail and doing a little dance with her front paws. She’s managed to scoot herself half way across the kitchen floor without ever standing up.” — Liz Lempert

JOHN AND DUDLEY

Owner: John Sayer, Retired Re-insurance Broker

Dog: Dudley, 6 year-old male adopted from a breeder after retiring from the dog show circuit

Breed: Bouvier des Flandres

Favorite Princeton Activity: Walking around town

Dudley is one lucky dog. John got a call in January 2014 informing him that a Bouvier show dog didn’t pass his eye exam, and the breeder no longer wanted him. Not only did John immediately drive to Connecticut to adopt the former U.S. and Canadian champion, but he also took Dudley to PennVet to get his eyes checked. As it turns out, Dudley’s vision is perfect. Always a champion in the Sayer’s eyes, John proudly states, “Dudley is our fourth and best Bouvier!” – John Sayer

Owner: Sarah Martinez, Lower School Teacher
at The Lewis School

Dog: Haimish, 3 year-old male

Breed: Miniature Australian Shepherd

Favorite Princeton Activity: Walking around town
with the students in nice weather

“Haimish is a kind-hearted, gentle, and caring dog. He loves children and is exceptionally patient with them. He is the ‘life of the party’ when we take him places outside of school. He loves to play with other dogs, especially his sister Scarlet. He began training at The Lewis School when he was 12 weeks old, so he has grown up here and many of the children remember when he was little. They have enjoyed watching him grow into the handsome dog that he is.” — Sarah Martinez

Teacher at The Lewis School

Dog: Tarzan, 3 year-old male from Crossing Paths Animal Rescue in Yardley, PA

Breed: Labrador Retriever/Irish Setter Mix

Favorite Princeton Activity: Visit The Lewis School

“Tarzan is a very sensitive dog. He has an innate ability to respond to people’s moods and sense when someone is upset. People who see him can’t help but smile, as he is such a happy and loving dog. Tarzan’s favorite foods are bananas, pretzels, and popcorn. He loves to stretch and will do downward-facing dog several times a day.” — Nicole Toto Vogel

What really keeps us coming back for more, though, is the balancing brightness of just a little lemon juice and, rare in the bottled chai world, fresh-pressed ginger.

Boardwalks of the Jersey Shore

$

shutterstock_150966026

In the words of Junot Diaz, It’s Where All of New Jersey Comes Together

By Ilene Dube

Whether made from Brazilian hardwood or recycled soda bottles, chances are a boardwalk will be making contact with your feet in the coming months. Boardwalks are about mingling: people-to-people, of course, but also a place where the scent of sauerkraut and mustard meets the sea air; the screams from carnival rides mingle with the crashing surf; and the steady rumble of pedestrians, cyclists and skateboarders overlaps with the serenity of those sitting on benches. At night, the peaceful dark sky is lit up with neon letters hawking cotton candy, Creamy Nut Hut Fudge, Philadelphia cheese steak and saltwater taffy.

Constructed pedestrian walkways overlooking beaches and the ocean can be found all over the world, but most are on the East Coast of the U.S. and some of the best known are on the Jersey Shore. The very first boardwalk was built in Atlantic City in 1870, in an area once frequented in summer by the Lenni Lenape. Beautiful beaches, fresh sea air, luxury hotels, restaurants and shops, as well as a railroad line from Camden, drew visitors from all over the world. The original boardwalk was constructed for housekeeping reasons: to keep sand out of railroad cars and hotels.

That first, with boards placed in a herringbone pattern, was only intended to be temporary and made to collapse for storage after the season, but it became the beach’s most popular attraction and an amusement pier was added. Build it and they will come—soon the boardwalk was rebuilt as a raised platform.

The first boardwalk built on pilings in Ocean County was at Point Pleasant Beach in the 1890s. Permanent boardwalks were also constructed at Seaside Park, Bay Head, Lavallette, and Beach Haven.

shutterstock_362072165

By the early 1900s many shore towns had planked walks, boardwalks or promenades. What had once been a practical means of getting to and from the beaches became a place to stroll, watch people and congregate. Women and men in the latest fashions, who wanted to see and be seen, knew the wooden walkway was the place to do so. Saltwater taffy, that sticky chewy gooey mixture of sugar, cornstarch, corn syrup, butter and salt, was invented in Atlantic City, and the first skee-ball tournament was held there in 1932.

As it became the entertainment mecca known as “America’s Playground,” some of the famous feet to tread AC’s boards belonged to Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Durante, Ed Sullivan, Joe DiMaggio, Frank Sinatra, Milton Berle, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and Bing Crosby. The Beatles ate Atlantic City’s famous subs on the boardwalk, and Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon opened a bowling alley.

Interestingly, to film the TV series Boardwalk Empire, set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, a section of the boardwalk was re-created in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Boardwalks evolved to become a commercial enterprise, carrying tourists from hotels to vendors. Economic downturns and hurricanes played havoc with leisure time at the Shore, but America’s romance with the boardwalk was renewed in 1964 when the Drifters were the first to record the classic “Under the Boardwalk.” After Hurricane Sandy, boardwalks at Seaside Heights and Belmar were rebuilt, and others at Tom’s River and Lavalette were restored. Long Branch was the last to reopen, in April.

Both the Atlantic City and Wildwoods boardwalks made National Geographic’s top 10 list. From Sandy Hook to Cape May Point, there’s a boardwalk to fill your needs.

Wildwoods Sign with People

It’s come a long way since it was a 150-foot platform in the 1890s. Today, at 2.5 miles, the Wildwoods boardwalk is sensory overload. There are three amusement piers with more than 100 rides and attractions, including world-class roller coasters, wet-and-wild beachfront water parks, carnival-style midway games, flashing arcades, retail shops and enough food stalls to satisfy the craving that beach air seems to stir.

The refrain you hear ad nauseum, “Watch the tram car, please,” was recorded in 1963 by North Wildwood resident Floss Stingel, and the trams are replicas of five original electric trains custom built for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Operating in the Wildwoods since 1949, the rebuilt trams can run for up to 12 hours on a single charge from 2,000-pound electric batteries.

Throughout its 100-plus year history, the Wildwoods Boardwalk has twice scooched closer to the ocean with the changing shoreline. It has been replicated in both Disneyland and Hershey Park, Pennsylvania.

Among the dizzying attractions planned for the coming season are the Grand Prix Raceway on Morey’s Adventure Pier—the largest go-kart track in the Wildwoods—to a new whimsical store filled with carousel horses and decorations from rides past on Mariner’s Pier. The family can bounce like kangaroos on the Kang’ A Bounce on Surfside Pier, and if you’re into repurposed shipping containers, you’ll ogle the 11 here, brightly painted by artists and now making up the new ticket office at Morey’s Adventure Pier. One of its many features is the “the Great White,” the tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster on the East Coast.

Cycling is permitted along the 2.5-mile stretch until 11 a.m. weekdays, 10:30 a.m. weekends. If your trunk is stuffed with beach chairs, umbrella and sand toys, you can rent bicycles, including tandems and surreys, throughout the Wildwoods.

Wildwoods Boardwalk

Among the events scheduled:

New Year’s in North Wildwood, Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11, with the top Mummers Brigades and Mummers String Bands, kicking off Friday night at 7 p.m. with a pub-crawl.

Latin Heritage Festival, Saturday, June 25, a culinary extravaganza with a Latin flair and including music, entertainment, an artisan area and children’s activities.

Wildwood Crest Sundown Celebrations, every Thursday, July 7 through August 18, with live music, children’s activities, street performers and stunning sunsets. www.wildwoodsnj.com

Ocean City’s boardwalk attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. From May to October, families have made it their tradition to flock here for wholesome alcohol-free entertainment—even smoking is restricted to designated areas.

Amusement parks offer thrill rides, go-karts, water parks, movie theaters, and high-tech arcades. Miniature golf theme parks feature fantasy island adventures with pirate folklore, such as Gillian’s Wonderland Pier at Boardwalk and 6th Street and Playland’s Castaway Cove at Boardwalk and 10th Street—both are jam-packed with rides.

Spanning 2.5 miles, the Ocean City boardwalk offers cycling, walking and jogging. (Cycling is limited to 5 a.m.-noon from May 15 to Labor Day.)

Restaurants and snack bars offer everything from pizza, ice cream and fudge to fine dining, and for those who love to shop, there are art galleries, apparel and novelty shops.

What to do at night? Every Thursday in July and August is family night on Ocean City’s boardwalk, with free live entertainment including music, magicians, yo-yo demonstrations, parades and face painting. www.oceancityvacation.com

In 2012, Superstorm Sandy devastated the Asbury Park Boardwalk, but it has been rebuilt and when you visit today, it’s as if the storm never happened. Although many of the historical buildings and landmarks such as the old casino have closed, Asbury Park still evokes nostalgia.

AP was developed in 1871 by Manhattan brush manufacturer James A. Bradley. Soon after, the boardwalk was constructed and featured an orchestra pavilion, public changing rooms and a pier extending into the ocean.

Today, visitors enjoy views of the beach and rock out at the Stone Pony, known for launching legends Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. The Kiefer Sutherland Band will appear May 24, followed by Slightly Stoopid on August 19.

The 3,600-seat Convention Hall has hosted the likes of Frank Sinatra, the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder and the Boss, with its state-of-the-art stage, spacious floor space and location right on the boardwalk.

At one-mile long, the boardwalk—an ideal day trip, 60 miles south of New York City and 90 minutes north of Atlantic City—offers something for the entire family, with Asbury Splash Park and the Silverball Museum Arcade.
www.apboardwalk.com

Even amid casino closings, the four-mile-long Atlantic City boardwalk remains an attraction, extending 1,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean at its Steel Pier, with kiddie rides, a family-restaurant and a separate bar. Here you can climb the 228 steps in the Absecon Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the country, also the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey. From its top you gain a whole new perspective of Atlantic City.

Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville is located inside the Resorts Hotel Casino where you can get nachos, cheeseburgers, “Jimmy’s Jammin’ Jambalaya,” and a vegetarian and gluten-free menu, along with the signature cocktail in numerous permutations (“Last Mango in Paris, “Feelin’ Hot Hot Hot”), live entertainment and a tiki bar.

Fralinger’s, the original saltwater taffy maker, is still in business. Too gooey? Try the fudge and macaroons.
www.atlanticcitynj.com

Sandy destroyed about a third of Ocean Grove’s one-mile boardwalk. The ultimate rebuilding was called a “miracle project” after FEMA funding was twice denied, on the grounds that it is a seaside community whose oceanfront is owned and maintained by the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, a non-profit religious organization. FEMA was finally swayed when a group of federal and state lawmakers unearthed documents saying the boardwalk has been recognized as public property and a public roadway since the early 1900s.

In Ocean Grove you will find arts and craft shows, mega flea markets, guided historical walking tours, free concerts in the Boardwalk Pavilion and performances in the legendary Great Auditorium. www.oceangrovenj.com/events.html

Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Point Pleasant is home to many fun rides and games. Featured rides include the carousel, Crazy Bus, Dizzy Dragons, Boardwalk Bounce and more. At Jenkinson’s Aquarium you will find everything from lizards and fish to starfish and penguins.

The mile-long boardwalk at Seaside has the Funtown Pier and the Casino Pier which features a merry-go-round built in 1913. A year after Sandy, Britain’s Prince Harry paid a visit. Seaside’s boardwalk suffered a fire in 2013 and is still rebuilding.

If you like to stroll, the boardwalk at Avalon Beach is seven miles long. The boardwalk at Sea Bright, on the other hand, is short and sweet at 170 feet long. It was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and rebuilt by volunteers from the New Jersey Fireman’s Mutual Benevolent Association and the Foundation to Save the Jersey Shore.

Looking for something quiet? Try the boardwalks at Avalon, Avon-by-the-Sea, Cape May, Lavallette, Sea Girt or Sandy Hook.

Many of the boards are built these days from materials more sustainable than wood, often from recycled plastics such as Trex and Timber Tech, and some are made of asphalt or concrete pavers. In colors with names like Winchester Gray and Spiced Rum, and without the smell of creosote and the splinters, they have a hollow sound and have been called soulless. On the other hand, towns that even think about using Brazilian hardwoods have been called far worse.

An Asbury Park a mural reads: “The boardwalk was where all of New Jersey came together, where New Jersey, for better or worse, met itself.”

The quote is from Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and New Jersey native Junot Diaz. “I would never have become the person I am as an artist if it hadn’t been for New Jersey and specifically if it hadn’t been for those 127 miles of shoreline that make New Jersey so special,” he said during Sandy recovery.

Q&A with Marta McDowell

North Jersey author Marta McDowell comes to Princeton to speak about her latest book.

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

In the midst of a tumultuous campaign season, author Marta McDowell brings us a place of political Zen: the White House grounds. Since its founding in 1800, our nation’s capital has been an 18-acre hub of garden inspirations, and McDowell captures it all in her new book, All the Presidents’ Gardens: Madison’s Cabbages to Kennedy’s Roses – How The White House Grounds Have Grown with America. From Eleanor Roosevelt’s Victory Garden to Michelle Obama’s Vegetable Garden, McDowell’s book provides an in-depth look at the evolution of the White House gardens and how they’ve influenced garden trends around the country.

On Saturday, June 11 at 3pm, the Chatham, NJ resident comes to Labyrinth Books in Princeton to speak about her latest title.   A passionate gardener, the author studied landscape design at the New York Botanical Garden where she teaches landscape history and horticulture. Here, view some of the period photographs in McDowell’s book that show our capital’s changing political landscape. To purchase All The Presidents’ Gardens, visit www.timberpress.com.
