Short Hills resident Leslie Hsu enters the world of fashion-technology with her latest accessory line.

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

Leslie Hsu knows accessories. The former fabric research and developer for Calvin Klein has had a hand in designing handbags and accessories for the likes of UGG Australia, True Religion Brand Jeans, Jonathan Adler, Zappos.com, and Barnes and Noble Nook, as well as her own eponymous handbag brand.

Dahlia Power WAllet Blush Fringe

Always at the helm of the design industry, Hsu’s most recent venture, PUNCHCASE, steps into the realm of fashion-technology. Knowing that few things are worse than a 1% battery charge, her high-quality accessory line offers wallets, clutches, cross body bags, and totes with built-in chargers. Her affordable products come in a myriad of funky prints, styles and colors like the multi-pink lips printed Roxy Power Bag, the blush fringe leather Dalia Power Wallet, and the green gloss camo Lily Power Tote.

Wondering how you survived for so long without these vital accessories? Us too. Luckily, in addition to its website, PUNCHCASE is offered at nearly 200 stockists nationwide, including several in our area. …because we could all use a little more cuteness in our newsfeed

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

The Morris Animal Inn is a pooch (and kitty) palace, and its residents are treated like royalty. The family owned and operated business is an internationally recognized boarding, daycare, training, and grooming facility for cats and dogs. In addition to offering amenities suitable for a five-star human hotel, the Inn provides a daily dose of adorability via their @morrisanimalinn Instagram page. Below are photos of their irresistible boarders living the good life at the pet resort.

No one deserves a post-pool aqua-massage and blow dry more than 3-month-old Ruthie. Also, neon orange life vests never looked this cute.

1

How couldn’t you offer these pups amenities such as room and maid service, soft natural lighting, lamb’s wool beds, and soothing music?

2

Rosie the French Bulldog not only had a birthday cake made for her, but also met a boy. In addition to specialty treats, the canine guests are fed Eukanuba and Iams dog food, as well as a Happy Hour treat!

3

Ruthie graduates from the Inn’s training program. You know the trainers are good when they get a dog to keep a hat on long enough to take a picture.

4

We wouldn’t be surprised if Simba went to town on the Inn’s new Kitty Wheel…or maybe it was their bedtime story session.

5

If Charlie the Labradoodle got a haircut complete with a green shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day, just imagine what the groomers can do for Christmas.

6

Scratch that, we know what to expect from The Morristown Animal Inn on Christmas: adorable puppies wearing antlers in Santa’s boots. We should’ve seen this coming.

7

Group play: where all doggie relationships begin.

6 Tips to Upgrade Your Outdoor Space

Sleek contemporary fire pit with matching cover doubles as coffee table when not in use.

Bring the comfort of home to your outdoor space with these tips from Pavillion Outdoor Furnishings in Montclair, New Jersey

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

Co-owners of Pavillion Outdoor Furnishings Lisa Mierop and Frank Contey are the authorities on outdoor living. Each with their own landscape design/build firm in Montclair; the duo has decades of experience outfitting the finest homes in north Jersey and beyond. This continues with Pavillion Outdoor Furnishings, an outdoor decorating service that turns patios, terraces, porches, pools, or decks into open-air oases. Mierop and Contey’s company guides clients through the purchase of furnishings and accessories that are home delivered and set-up by their team. From space planning to fabric selection, Pavillion Outdoor Furnishings attends to every aspect of their designs. The company’s impeccable work is clearly represented in their showroom located at 120 Walnut Street in Montclair, NJ (973.783.3100) where high-end home décor items can be purchased. Here, Mierop shares her go-to tips for enhancing any outdoor space.

Understand your space and style

Is the purpose of your outdoor room dining, cooking, entertaining or all of the above? Putting it in ‘interior’ terms, is the space a dining room, kitchen, living room or a combination of all? Is your style traditional, modern or somewhere in between? Once you have answered these key questions, you can more easily identify what pieces you’ll need and what look you’re going for.

Plan out the space

Make a scale diagram on paper or use a simple online drafting tool to measure out the space. Be realistic about what can and can’t fit, leaving ample room for access in and out of doorways or around dining chairs. If you don’t want to plan out the space on your own, choose a retailer or designer that will walk you through the process. Ask to see a layout with various options if possible and ask to see samples of materials and fabrics.

Image 2

Luxury pool pergola furnished with Summer Classics dining and deep seating collections.

 Be realistic about costs

Outdoor furnishings are an investment and like anything else, you get what you pay for. There are many great options out there today, but generally the more quality you invest in, the more likely these furnishings will withstand the elements and give you many good years of use and performance.

Play with color

Neutrals for cushions are the easiest choice, especially when children and pets may be sharing the space. We like to recommend going neutral for the main fabric choice and then play with color accents in pillows, rugs and accessories. This way you can change things up easily and often

Don’t forget about lighting

Lighting is often overlooked out of doors, but at dusk into nighttime, relaxing and entertaining are important. Don’t forget to add the ambiance and practicality that light brings. There are many options: candles and lanterns are classic, fire tables and firepits create a great reason to gather well into the fall months. Fun and colorful torcheres add an exotic island touch, while fanciful string lights can create rustic charm, a party atmosphere, or dining elegance when carefully interlaced on tree branches. There are even outdoor lamps with fully outdoor specified wiring and an enclosed bulb housing to give that real ‘indoor’ lighting ambiance to your patio side tables and consoles.

Incorporate fabric accessories

The outdoor fabric market has exploded with fade, rain, and weather resistant introductions for many uses: colorful rugs, fantastic pillows and, drapery accents in delicate sheers.

Fun Facts About the 136th US Open

$
0
0

@usopen

Today marks day four of the US Open, where big-name celebrities and tennis fans alike flood to Queens, NY to watch some serious tennis before summer’s close. Here, we outline some interesting facts and figures about the highly anticipated USTA event.

Thanks to the Arthur Ashe Stadium’s new retractable roof, today’s inclement weather won’t impact play. Debuted for the 2016 tournament, the roof cost $150 million dollars and can close in 10 minutes. (www.architecturaldigest.com)

The first ever US Open Tennis Tournament began on August 31, 1881. It was a men’s-only tournament held at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island and was played yearly by US tennis players only.

Six years later, the first US Women’s National Singles Championships were held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. (www.ticketcity.com)

The largest total attendance to a US Open tournament was 721, 059 people in 2009. Last year, more than 600,000 people total attended the event. (www.baruch.cuny.edu)

The US Open court is made of DecoTurf, a cushioned surface that is laid using six three-millimeters-thick layers and an asphalt base. The in-bound courts were made blue in 2005 because it is the exact opposite color of the yellow Wilson tennis ball, giving it the most contrast for players and spectators. (www.si.com)

Since 1978, the tournament has been played on acrylic hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens, NYC.

The “Open Era” of tennis began in 1968, when tennis tournaments allowed professionals to compete with amateurs. That’s when the tournament earned its grand slam status and started to be called the US Open Tennis Championship. (www.totalsportek.com)

American tennis players Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras are tied for the most men’s singles titles in the US Open with five each. Connors earned his titles between 1974 and 1983 and Sampras earned his between 1990 and 2002. (www.totalsportek.com)

American tennis players Chris Evert and Serena Williams are tied for the most ladies’ singles titles in the US Open with six each. Williams faced a big upset last year when she lost to Roberta Vinci in the semifinals, delaying her 7th title and her chance to complete the calendar Grand Slam.

1973 was the first year that men and women were paid the same amount for the win. The total Prize Money pool for 2016 is $46.3 million – a 10% increase from 2015 – making it the highest paying tennis grand slam in the world.

Jennifer Poe’s 10 Favorite Things

headshotBy Sarah Emily Gilbert

Throughout one of the hottest summers in history, a highly pregnant Jennifer Poe was hard at work in her Newtown, Pennsylvania interior design store, Rittenhouse Home Furniture and Décor. Merely weeks after giving birth to a baby boy, Poe is back at it, heading some of the most sought-after interior design projects in the Greater Philadelphia area.

This type of work ethic is nothing new for the recent mother of four. Since the age of 19, she has had a hand in the purchasing, gutting, and renovating of homes, quickly establishing her visionary talent. After graduating from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Poe founded Rittenhouse Home Furniture and Décor, a full-service boutique firm with cosmopolitan sensibilities. Her storefront may be located in Newtown, but her clientele spans from Philadelphia’s most discerning neighborhoods to Bergen County.

Committed to quality, Poe attends tradeshows nationwide in pursuit of home products that meet Rittenhouse Home’s high-standards and impeccable taste.

Poe’s ability to create a timeless space with modern influences is a significant factor in her firm’s popularity. “I love the ever-changing trends in home design,” she explains. “I do my due diligence to see what is available, what is coming to the market, and bring the best of it into my client’s homes.” From Bernhardt recliners to Rutt cabinetry, Poe is an expert on the 180+ luxury American brands she carries, all of which are sold at trade price. “You’re not just buying furniture or cabinets from me,” explains Poe, “You are getting the Rittenhouse Home stamp on your entire project.” It takes a single look at Poe’s portfolio to see the value of that stamp.

Most designers specialize in either kitchens or interiors, but Poe refuses to be pigeonholed into a single design realm. Instead, she’s molded the two areas together in response to the growing popularity of open-concept kitchens that seamlessly flow into an adjacent space such as the family room. Working closely with respected vendors, contractors, and colleagues, Poe exudes her creative energy throughout an entire home.

“If you do a space in a tasteful manner and blend different trends, it will speak for itself,” says Poe. It’s not about one piece; it’s about the overall outcome of the project, the harmony between the colors, textures, and furnishings. My designs mix old world and new world to create timeless sophistication.”

Poe’s design aesthetic is clearly represented in the rotating Rittenhouse showroom located at 17 North State Street. Meticulously curated, the set is often purchased directly from the floor, but clients also have access to a myriad of special order items that Poe has personally approved. An example of her contemporary showroom offerings is an armoire that opens up to reveal a hidden refrigerator and freezer – a piece that certainly speaks for itself.

When clients hire the Rittenhouse team, they’re signing up for a stress-free design process. Poe has a proclivity for translating her client’s ideas into unforgettable spaces, while honoring their diverse tastes and lifestyles. By the end of the design process, Poe sees her clients more like family, and treats them as such. “You spend a lot of time together and there’s a lot of decisions made. I take it very seriously that my clients hired me to handle the most personal thing in their lives – their home. With Rittenhouse, it’s one-stop-shopping. All our clients have to do is be wowed by our designs, we’re on top of everything else.”

Poe not only exhibits design excellence, but also business acumen as she opens up her third storefront on North State Street this fall. Called Luxey Little Ones, it will offer the same home design services as Poe’s other shops, but with a focus on baby and child. The standalone boutique will also carry strollers, car seats, and other gear from well-respected private label and European brands. Who better to open up Newtown’s first boutique of this kind than this impressive momtrenpreneur?

To schedule an appointment with Rittenhouse Home Design and Furniture call (215) 579-0400. Here, Poe takes Princeton Magazine beyond her business and into her world of Peloton Cycling, Poncho Margaritas, and more.

Mima Stroller:

“The Mima Stroller is a luxury designer baby stroller made by a European brand, and it looks like a Ferrari. As a new mom, I can attest to how amazing it is, and will have it available in my new showroom, Luxey Little Ones.”

Turks and Caicos:

“Turks and Caicos is my favorite vacation spot. When we visit, we stay at the Windchaser Villas. The villas are newly built and located directly on the beach with a first floor walkout to a pool and wet bar. They have a sleek and modern island design with an ideal layout as far as living space and entertaining.”

Peloton Bike:

“The Peloton bike allows you to cycle at home, and I love that I can ride any time I want. I can take a live class, or a class on demand, and pick the instructor and music, which is always really great.”

witherspoon-grill-367x293_sized

Witherspoon Grill:

Witherspoon Grill is my go-to lunch spot, and their Poncho Margarita and steak tar tar are my favorites. I like sitting outside on their patio in the middle of Palmer Square, sipping a margarita and taking in the view.”

poe-kitchen-design

Kitchens:

“My favorite room in a house is the kitchen. I get my passion for cooking in a very functional kitchen, which has so many layers. There’s the hood, counter tops, cabinet hardware… As an interior designer, these different elements allow me to be as creative as I want.”

perfume

Amouage Scent, Honour Woman:

“It’s a sexy scent that’s clean and stays all day. It perfectly transitions from day to night.”

Family Time:

“I have four children: a newborn, a 5 year-old, a 9 year-old, and an 11 year-old. I love spending time with them. As they get older, it’s nice to connect with them in different ways depending on their age. My two older girls are more connected to the outside world and I love hearing their viewpoints. I’m enjoying watching my 5-year-old just start to come into his own, and it’s amazing to snuggle with my newborn.”

Watching Reality TV:

“I have so many things going on between my design studio, the new store, and being a mom that I need mindless TV. It’s the best to just plop on the couch with a glass of wine and zone out to Bachelor in Paradise.

goyard-tote-bag

Goyard Tote Bag:

“This is the best universal tote for being a mom. It transitions perfectly in my life. At work, it becomes my business bag and fits my laptop, and when going out, it doubles as a diaper bag. It’s also great because it can be wiped off.”

The on-demand fabric producer now offers DIY home décor products through Roostery.com

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

“But I can see it in my head!”

It’s the line we use when that interior design project, outfit selection, or decorating effort doesn’t lead to the vision in mind. We can think up endless prints, colors, and patterns for our projects, but the problem occurs when we can’t find exactly what we imagine. Spoonflower understands that retail stores aren’t always as well stocked as our brains. That’s why their website allows users to put their own creations on custom fabrics, wallpaper, and gift wrap. Although Spoonflower is based in Durham, North Carolina, its 3.5 million users are from around the world.

Users upload a file of their own design or select one of the more than 350,000 designs available on the Spoonflower Marketplace, where designers receive a commission on the sales of their print. The site offers a myriad of print options from cats with crayons and oopma loopas to floating origami and mod mint triangles. Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, the pattern browsing alone is worth a trip to the website.

As of this summer, Spoonflower launched its sister company, Roostery, that allows users to put Spoonflower designs on home décor products like throw pillows, napkins, place mats, and tea towels. Come Septemeber 15, seating options will also be available. Each design can be previewed on a 3D model of the product before it is made-on-demand and delivered approximately three weeks later. The entire process results in an eco-friendly production process that leaves behind no excess fabric — or second thoughts about a design.

Get designing at Roostery.com, “Where personal expression comes home to roost.”
